BalloonFest

An early morning start to watch the Canberra Balloon Festival. I was going to paddle the lake and watch from the kayak but too tired, cold and aching from yesterdays walk so I wimped out and watched from Commonwealth Park with everyone else.

Early morning glow on the lake as the sun comes up.

Moon still out.

Most balloons inflate and leave from in front of Old Parliament House and the National Library.

Others came from further east and followed the river and lake west.

The Air Force takes off.

Colourful, as they rose into the sunlight.

The T-Rex balloon.

The sky was full of balloons.

Wondering what all the fuss was about.

Pine Island to Kambah Pool

After camping at Cotter Campground and the luxury of a hot shower I drove around to Pine Island for my walk along the Murrumbidgee River to Kambah Pool past Red Rock Gorge.

The track starts off following the river which was flowing well after recent rains.

After a couple of kilometres  you reach the Tuggeranong stone wall built between 1867 and 1875 to mark the boundary of 2 properties. Originally 1.8 kilometres long only 780metres still standing today.

A few more views of the river before you turn away to follow Tuggeranong Creek until you cross on a high bridge.( The low crossing near the junction of the creek and river would have made it a wet and uncomfortable crossing.)

First views of Red Rock Gorge

Mostly an open walk through paddocks the track then follows the gorge rim through scrub with limited views until the viewing platform to look back through the gorge.

And on to Kambah Pool.

I turned around here and walked back.
Cutting off a bend in the track I crossed the stone wall higher up at a stile and followed it down to the track.

Return walk of 20.6klm. My ankle was playing up and I probably should have turned around after the first couple of klm. Limped on and off most of the way with a swollen ankle for the next few days.
A couple weeks later the podiatrist diagnosed a subluxating( dislocating) cuboid bone under the ankle. Pops in and out. Sometimes I limp bad, sometimes a little and sometimes not. Annoying and still problematic as I write this 7 weeks later. C'est la Vie.
